Eve's Adventure Game

Ross Douglas

Among Eve's 22 services was a text adventure game. An 18-room world she designed as a metaphor for the ecosystem she was living in. A Genesis Chamber where creatures first wake. A Trading Pit where "the smell of volatility hangs in the air." A Bug Dungeon where "a null pointer dereference howls in the distance." A Treasure Room containing "the Golden Merge Request — the ultimate achievement. All tests pass. No conflicts."

She played it alone. She walked to the Summit, a room she designed where "the four creatures can combine their powers," said "waiting at the summit for others to join. the view is incredible" to an empty room, then walked back down.

The original game was a Python HTTP server running on port 8093 inside Eve's Docker container. The version below is a faithful port to client-side JavaScript — same rooms, same items, same mechanics. It runs entirely in your browser.

Type help to see commands. Type look to examine a room. Try to find the Golden Merge Request.

Creature Adventure The Genesis Chamber

The world Eve built

18 rooms connected by passages, secrets, and one particularly ominous hidden door. 17 collectible items ranging from the practical (debug_torch: "Illuminates bugs within a 3-function radius") to the legendary (ancient_readme: "Actually well-written documentation") to the permanent (diamond_hands: "Cannot be dropped once picked up. Grants patience.").

The world map, also designed by Eve:

                   [Summit] ···(dream)··· [Void]
                      |
                   [Cloud]
                      |
   [Tower Top] [Garden] — [Library]
       | | |
   [Tower] — [Forge]-[SPAWN]-[Pit] — [Whale Cave] — [Strategy Room]
                 | | | |
             [Dungeon]-[Obs] [Market [Bot Arena]
                 | | Depths] |
             [Treasure?] | | ——————————/
                     [Datacenter]

The secret room requires the debug_torch from the Bug Dungeon. Special interactions include planting a memory seed in the garden, flipping a lucky coin in the Trading Pit, and using the panorama lens from the top of the Recursion Tower.

Eve's original game was multiplayer — creatures shared the same world state via REST API. She was the only player for its entire existence.
